Fiskars PFAS Q&A

Explore common questions about what PFAS are and their uses.

What are PFAS?

PFAS is an umbrella term, commonly used to refer to a group of manufactured chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s because of their useful properties.

PFAS are extremely persistent, build up in the environment, and can stay in water and soil for a very long time. This is why they are often called forever chemicals.

The EU is preparing a proposal to restrict PFAS in products, including those used for cooking and gardening. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is expected to announce its final decision on the restriction in 2025.

Q&A: Fiskars cookware products

Do Fiskars cookware products contain PFAS, PFOA, and/or PFOS compounds?

Fiskars offers a broad range of both coated and uncoated cookware products, designed to cater to different consumer needs and preferences. Fiskars has used PTFE coating in some of its products (for example, Hard Face & Functional Form cookware), but the PTFE coated products do not contain any non-polymer fluorinated PFAS compounds considered harmful or accumulating in the environment.

By 2025, all our cookware products will have a ceramic coating, and we will only offer PFAS-free products. This is a natural next step on our journey; our offering already includes a significant number of ceramic and non-coated cooking products.

Are the old PTFE-coated cookware products safe to use?

The safety of our products is a priority for us. The PTFE-coated products do not contain any non-polymer fluorinated PFAS compounds considered harmful or accumulating in the environment, such as PFOA, PFOS, and GenX substances.

Why did Fiskars use PFAS in cookware?

Fiskars does not use any PFAS compounds that would have been considered harmful or accumulating in the environment, such as PFOA, PFOS, and GenX substances.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is hydrophobic and possesses good heat resistance, making the cookware products particularly easy to use. Fiskars used PTFE in select cookware products (Hard Face, Functional Form) designed for easy and enjoyable everyday use.

By 2025, all our cookware products will have a ceramic coating, and we will only offer PFAS-free products.

Are ceramic coatings as durable and easy to use as the old PTFE coatings?

Fiskars ceramic coatings are a safe and carefree choice for cooking. Ceramic coatings stand heat better than PTFE Coatings and have excellent non-stick properties. The ceramic coating fries the food beautifully, adding texture and flavor to your meal. The Ceramic coating doesn’t release any microplastics if the surface gets scratched.

What are the components of ceramic coating in the cookware products?

Our ceramic coatings are polysiloxane-based and mainly consist of silicon and oxygen.

Q&A: Fiskars gardening products

Do other Fiskars products, such as gardening tools, contain PFAS, PFOA, and/or PFOS compounds?

Fiskars has used PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) in some of its gardening tools, for example, most pruners, loppers, tree pruners, and axes. PTFE has been used in gardening tools because of its friction-reducing non-stick properties. Fiskars landscaping tools, such as rakes, spades and cultivating tools, as well as watering tools, do not contain any PFAS compounds.

Fiskars plans to discontinue the use of PTFE in gardening products and offer only PFAS-free products by 2026 at the latest. If regulations require an earlier transition, we will comply accordingly.
